Tracy’s Day With Drew

A few weeks ago I spent the day with new Orange County photography Tracy Laulhere (website coming soon!). She’s a Stanford educated mom of 2 who’s decided to turn her love of photography into a business. It’s a good thing I didn’t know she was a Stanford grad until we had already started our session because I would have been intimidated! Tracy has done her research in photography. She’s bought all the right equipment. Gone to seminars with the best photographers in Orange County. And has perfected her logo and is working on perfecting her website and blog. She’s getting everything lined up perfectly before starting her business.

But, my question to her was, is it ever going to be perfect? My advice to Tracy was to listen to her heart and dive in. Let her emotions drive her instead of her brain and see where it takes you. A lot of photography is emotional. The way you connect with your clients. The way you depict the love you see through your lens. You can’t (or at least I can’t) rationalize everything that I do with photography. Sometimes you have to just go with it and let your heart lead the way.

I am very excited to see Tracy’s website and blog! I know she will put out nothing but an amazing product!

Krista’s Day With Drew

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of spending the day with Orange County photographer Krista Secoda of K Sue Photography. Krista is the Mom of two young girls and is also currently a teacher. She’s decided to take a big step and take next year off from teaching and pursue her passion for photography! I think anyone can start a photography business. But, to be successful you have to have an eye for photography and be driven. Krista has both so I know she is going to do great!

The super cute and fun Cisneroz family modeled for us. They are on a very exciting adventure to Africa this summer to adopt two kids from Ethiopia! This session was to capture their family as a family of 4 before they grow to a family of 6! I’m really excited for them!

Laycee’s Day With Drew

Laycee is a brand new photographer who just started last October. Not only is she a photographer, but she is a Mom to a 20 month old boy AND pregnant with baby number two AND she is going to school AND she works part time. Can you say busy, busy, busy? Laycee contacted me for a mentoring session and really wanted help with time management. When you are a new photographer it’s very easy to do things the hard way. With my mentoring sessions I love to share my experiences with photographers to help shave a few months off the learning curve. If I can teach them tricks that took me a few months (or years) to learn then that can save them from making the same mistakes and save them lots of time! Not only did we work on time management, but I was able to show Laycee some tricks to get her pictures better straight out of camera, which will in turn save her time while editing. Win, win!

Laycee is super determined and knows what she wants. She is confident and really, that is half the battle when you are building your photography business. If you’re not confident in yourself than why would your clients be? I saw a HUGE improvement with her photography from our session. And not only did I see it, but so did Laycee! I was so happy that she left our session excited, enthused, and ready to take her business to the next level! I can’t wait to see where she will take her business next!

Onto our shoot! I got a ton of great entries for models this time around, but I chose Erin and Scott because of their story. Scott is in the Marines and just got back from being in Iraq for 7 months this past August. They also had a baby girl that was born in August just a few days before Scott returned safely home. Which means that Scott was away for Erin’s entire pregnancy. I just can’t imagine. But, Erin wasn’t sitting at home feeling sorry for herself. She told me that it’s what you make of it. What an amazing attitude, especially for such a young woman. I really admire both Erin and Scott for the sacrifices they made for our country.

Erin and Scott are high school sweethearts so I decided shooting at a high school (although not their high school since they are from New York) would be fun! Then we moved onto a beautiful field where we got very lucky and got to take a couple of shots with a very rambuctious horse named Amigo that was scared of Erin’s dress

Thank you to Laycee for coming out and spending the day with me and thank you to both Erin and Scott for all the hard work you put into looking great for the shoot! I had a ton of fun with all of you!

Megan Ann Photography

When another photographer contacts you to shoot their pictures it’s very flattering, but at the same time super nerve wracking. Photographers know what they want and it puts a lot of pressure to do something fun and creative. But, it’s also very flattering because out of all the amazing photographers in Southern California they are picking you to shoot their pictures!

I met Megan about a year ago. She signed up to do a mentoring session with me and we had so much fun! Megan’s business has really grown over the past year and she’s just about finished with a new blog and branding. How exciting!

We had a ton of fun on this shoot! What’s really funny though is that Megan lost her keys at the very beginning of the shoot. We can laugh about it now, but it wasn’t funny at the time! We looked for them for a few minutes, but we were losing light so I told her she just had to forget about it and focus! The gates to the area we were shooting in closed at 5. Once we were done shooting we had about 30 minutes to take down the props and find the keys. We couldn’t find them anywhere! As Megan was calling a dealership to see if she could get a new set of keys I found them! And right at that time the guard was coming to close the gate! It was a close call!

Couple Models Needed

ETA: Models have been chosen! Thanks so much for all the emails! I will keep them all on file for my next session.

I’m looking for a couple to model for an upcoming mentoring session on Friday, March 26. The session will take place at 5pm in Fullerton, California.

Here’s what I’m looking for:

1) A fun couple who is very much in love. You don’t have to be married, but if you have wedding day attire that is a huge plus!

2) A very RELIABLE couple who will be on time and dependable.

3) A couple that I have not worked with before. I love all of my clients, but I like to show my mentorees how I interact with clients I have never met before.

If you are a family with children please do not email. I will post again when I’m looking for families.

Andrea’s Day With Drew

Andrea contacted me about doing a mentoring session after she bought my UNposing Guide. She’s a photographer from the San Francisco Bay area, but grew up in Southern California so her session was also a great excuse to come home for a weekend. Andrea is working full time while growing her photography business, which I can totally relate to since that’s how I did it as well. Technically she’s a great photographer and knows how to work her camera. What we really worked on was how to manage her time (including how to price her sessions) so she can have a life outside of working 2 jobs and how to have the confidence to really “own the shoot” as Andrea calls it I think she’s on her way to doing great things!

We had an awesome family to model for us! The Brown family were a ton of fun to work with and on top of that are super cute! Naomi is four and a half. Zoe is two. And there’s a new baby due in June! Julez and Aaron are so cute together and you can really tell how much they love each other and their kids!

Carolyn’s Day With Drew

Last weekend blogless and websiteless Carolyn Connely came to spend the day with me! Her first homework assignment was to get a blog so I’ll update this post when she gets one Carolyn is a super busy mom of 2 gorgeous kids who is in the process of getting her Masters degree! On top of all of that she has been taking pictures for her family and friends and wanted to learn how to turn that into a photography business. Carolyn is super motivated and definitely has a lot of talent so I’m very excited to see where she takes her business! Our shoot was with the Schoppman family and we worked on how to make natural light work for us and also UNposing. Here are some of my pictures from the shoot and hopefully Carolyn’s blog will be up soon so I can share some of hers! Thanks for coming out and spending the day with me, Carolyn! I’m very excited to see you turn your dream into a reality!
