Heather is a client turned friend. I shot 3 sessions for them in 9 months last year (family, maternity, and newborn) and we realized that our families had so many similarities. Then we moved to the same town at pretty much the same time and we’ve pretty much been inseperable since. Our daughters are BFF’s. They are just too much alike. Our boys get along great. And our husbands work in similar fields so there is always something to talk about. Plus, Heather makes the worlds best chocolate chip cookies so I have to stay on her good side
We did this shoot for Carter’s first birthday. I’ve loved getting to watch this kid grow up. He’s such a Mama’s boy and has the most handsome smile. I can’t wait until he’s running around chasing the big kids. I know he’s ready too!
The Couple: Heather & Matt
The Story (in Heather’s words): Matt and I met in November of 2000. I had recently graduated college and moved to Orange County for a job in dental hygiene. He was one of my patients in those first few months working. It didn’t take long into the appointment to know I was attracted to not only his looks, but his charm, humor, and of course, teeth. He called me at work a few days later to ask me out. And as cliché as it sounds, by the end of the night I knew he was the man I would spend the rest of my life with.
I took him on a trip to Maui in July of 2004 to celebrate his undergraduate degree and acceptance into dental school. Unbeknownst to me he planned on proposing while we there. At the top of Mount Haleakala, at the most amazing sunrise I have ever witnessed, he asked me to marry him. The next year seemed like an eternity as we had to live an hour apart as he started school, but it was all worth it when we were married in June of 2005.
Ryland, 5 – He’s sweet, sensitive and smart, just like his Daddy! He amazes me everyday with the boy he’s becoming and I’m so grateful he’s such a great role model for his sister and brother.
Brynn, 2/12 – Oh Brynn, what can I say? She’s stubborn, strong-willed, and very independent, just like her Mama! My parents always tell me she’s my “payback.” But to be honest I wouldn’t want her to be any other way. I love her confidence and know it will be a good thing when she’s older. After all, I turned out ok…right?
Carter, 1 – He brings so much joy to all our lives and we knew from the moment he was born our family felt complete. He reminds me so much of his big brother. Not only does he look exactly like him, but he’s also so cuddly and loving, and constantly keeps us laughing.
The Session: This is the fourth time we’ve had the privilege of Drew photographing our family. Pretty much right after Carter’s newborn session last January, I started thinking about his first birthday shoot.
What I love most about Drew is that she tries to think of ways to make each session unique. She takes the time to get to know her clients and tailors every session to fit their family’s interests or hobbies. She knew of my love for making quilts and creating heirlooms that my children will treasure forever. She felt we should incorporate it somehow. I told her I wanted to do a beach session and she came up with the idea of a quilted sailboat. I immediately knew we had to make it happen. Thanks to her amazing husband for building the raft, and my brother for creating the mast, our vision was even better than I had hoped for. I decided to use a vintage quilt top that would allow all that beautiful sunlight that Drew is famous for, to stream through. I love, love, love these images! And I know I’m biased, but I think they are her best yet!
The Fine Print: My piece of advice for other Moms is simply to trust their photographer. I’ve been so quick to get frustrated with my kids when they aren’t cooperating. But the more stressed I get, the worse the kids act. The kids definitely listened to Drew better once I stepped back and let her do her thing. She’s a great Mom and knows what she’s doing. I’m definitely going to come back and read my own advice before next time!
The Image: This is a tough one. I love them all. I love the images all three of my kids together. I love the ones with the beautiful boat. But I think what really tugs at my heartstrings and will always hold a special place in my heart is this image of me and my boy. My last baby. I know once he’s too big to hold in my arms, I can look at this picture and be brought back to this small, fleeting moment where I can hear his laughter again and almost feel his embrace.
